Having served as a teacher and administrator in the School District of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for decades, Douglas Dockey is no stranger to children’s back-to-school needs. However, seeing needy students being turned away empty-handed from a back-to-school event this fall because organizers ran out of supplies, alerted him to the current magnitude of the need and inspired him to find a way to help. “Schools are hurting because of budget cutbacks. I’ve got the time and energy to do good for other people,” he says.
Using Create The Good’s Equipped to Learn toolkit, Douglas organized a highly successful school supply collection. He decorated bankers boxes with photos of students and USA Today and Viva articles on the high cost of school supplies, and a Mason jar with the Create The Good logo, serving as a collection for monetary contributions. He placed the collection bins in churches, at AARP chapter meetings, at senior expos and elsewhere. To help spread the word, he made flyers announcing the collection and reached out to newsletters, church bulletins, local newspapers and more.
Douglas’s efforts have paid off for local children. He has collected so many supplies at times that they hardly fit into his car. Donations include backpacks, notebooks, pencils, hand sanitizers, crayons and tissues.
Though the school year is well underway, Douglas sees an ongoing need for supplies and hopes to continue his collection efforts on a permanent basis, year-round. “I like to see people coming in with a bag of donations, and see that they’re happy about what they’re doing. It puts a smile on their faces and a smile on mine. It doesn’t take a lot of time or effort, and you feel really good about what you can accomplish,” he says.
Many Ways to Create The Good
In addition to his work on behalf of local schoolchildren, Douglas spends much of his time volunteering with community organizations on a regular basis. He divides his time between projects with the local PBS station, the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg, Central PA LGBT Aging Network, Central PA Pride Festival, Retired Senior Volunteers of PA, Inc., and other service projects in Central Pennsylvania. “Anything that keeps me connected with people in various communities and shows that my efforts are beneficial and appreciated is what I look for in volunteering,” he says.
