The leaves are changing, the air is cooling, and that makes this the perfect time for pre-holiday crafting. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Craft and send.
Many organizations seek the help of talented crafters and offer the convenience of volunteering from your own home. You can donate 7x9-inch, crocheted and knitted rectangles to be joined and assembled into afghan blankets. Or make security blankets for kids battling HIV, drug abuse, child abuse, or chronic and terminal illnesses. And with Knots of Love, you can warm the heads and hearts of cancer patients by knitting and delivering a handmade cap. Not so crafty with the knitting needles but know how to sew? Help make little dresses for Africa. Or get into the fold and donate origami cranes and hope to children suffering from cancer. You can also help raise money for charity and relief work when you donate a wide range of arts and crafts to be sold by a non-profit.
Brighten their day.
Plan a “brighten your day” project for a local family in need, where you put together and decorate a “basket of cheer,” filled with snacks, clothing and grocery gift cards. Craft an emergency supply kit to help keep your neighbors prepared. Or contact your local senior center about hosting a crafting event. In exchange for sharing your crafting talents, they may agree to cover the cost of supplies. After your event, consider gathering the crafts to donate to a local shelter, children’s hospital or youth center. You can even get kids in on the volunteer fun.
Find inspiration all around you.
Your home may be a virtual craft supply store, without you even realizing it. Let the kids’ imaginations run wild as they recycle household items into new toys. And turn everyday household junk into valuable gifts you can donate or share. Take your best ideas into the classroom by offering to teach an art class at your local school, or simply having your child inspire others at show-and-tell. These ideas are just the start.
