Break free from your comfort zone by trying something totally different. You have nothing to lose – and your community has everything to gain. Here are some ways to ring in the new year with a new approach to volunteering.
Teach something you already know.
Take a minute to reflect on something you’re good at – or something that really makes you stand out. Maybe you show a student how to use mnemonic devices to ace a spelling test. Or how about coaching a basketball team on Saturdays? The point is that as you’re passing down your wisdom, you just might learn more about yourself along the way.
Learn something new – and share it.
There’s a lot to be said about doing something you’ve never done before. New experiences give you the courage to meet people, get involved and see things differently. It can be as simple as taking a cooking class – and then inviting your neighbors over to share what you’ve learned. By stepping out of your comfort zone, you’re not only inspiring yourself. You’re inspiring the people around you.
Do something extraordinary.
When we get caught up in our daily routines, we can forget to push ourselves to be better. That’s why it’s so important to mix things up every once in a while. Try sprinkling wildflower seeds around town. You’ll be surprised by how much cheer will pop up all around you. Another idea is to perform three random acts of kindness each day. Whether you donate old towels to an animal shelter or return shopping carts for people at the grocery store, your good deeds will likely inspire others.
Dare to dabble in dreamland.
Is there a job you always wanted but were too pragmatic to give a try? It’s a new year – and this is your chance. Always wanted to be pilot? Volunteer at an airport. Love professional or college sports? Give your time at a local sports event. Thought it would be cool to be a rockstar? Help a neighbor learn guitar. When you start seeing your dreams as opportunities to make a difference, amazing things can happen.
